Hyderabad Metro History

The idea of establishing the metro system first started in 2003. The project was started to address the increasing traffic crowding and improve the growing city's transport needs. But, the Metro Rail project was officially started in November 2017. Metro Rail Limited, a public-private partnership between the L&T Metro Rail Limited and the Government of Telangana, started the Metro Rail project.

It was started by the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Telangana. The inaugural function took place at the Miyapur Metro Station in the city. The first phase of the Metro is the Red Line and the Blue Line, which became operational on the same day of the start.

The Blue Line is run by Metro from all active metro stations in the city. The Red Line runs from Miyapur to LB Nagar, and the Blue Line connects Nagole to Raidurg. The Metro Rail project has improved the city's transport network, offering a reliable mode of travel for the people of the city. The number of stations is 57, with 3 corridors, and the length is 67 km. The Metro Rail project was done in phases, and now three lines are operational:

Red Line: The Red Line was the first line that became operational. It connects from Miyapur to LB Nagar, and it covers a distance of 29 kilometers. The line has a total of 27 stations, and it has important areas like

  • Begumpet
  • Secunderabad
  • Dilsukhnagar
  • Punjagutta

Blue Line: The Blue Line is the second line of the Metro Rail. It is from Nagole to Raidurg and covers a distance of 28 kilometers. The line has 23 stations, connecting areas such as Secunderabad, Ameerpet, Uppal, Tarnaka, and Jubilee Hills.

Green Line: The Green Line is a short line between Jubilee Bus Station and Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station. It is over a distance of 11 kilometers, and it has 9 stations. The Green Line provides a good transport network between the major bus terminals of the city.

The Metro project is ongoing, with new lines constructed to expand the metro network.

Purple Line: The Purple Line is also known as Corridor 2, or it is known as the East-West corridor, and it is under construction. It will run from BHEL to LB Nagar, and it covers a distance of 15 kilometers. The line has 14 stations, connecting areas like Khairatabad, Kothape, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, and Narsapur.

Pink Line: The Pink Line is also called Corridor 3 and is under construction. It will stretch from Nagole and cover a distance of 30 kilometers. The line has 29 stations and connects areas like Raidurg, Gachibowli, and Hitec City.

There are plans for expansion of the Metro network in the future. These projects include additional lines to existing lines, enhancing a good transport network within the city and its suburbs.
